Appropriate technology, public transport, cooperative energy and repairable design offered modernity without endless expansion.
Industrial and digital systems bring capability while concentrating pollution, dangerous labour, extraction and surveillance in particular communities.
Efficiency still persuades us, but climate crisis and platform power now make questions of maintenance, limits and governance unavoidable.
