WHY IT MATTERS
Today’s debate appears to ask whether models understand language. Underneath it lies a harder question: what evidence makes us recognise a mind, and who has the authority to define intelligence?
Performance alone cannot settle the question. Every machine capability is connected to training material, evaluation systems, human labour and social expectations about efficiency.

The question did not begin with generative AI. It formed across mechanical calculation, formal logic, wartime research and changing ideas about automation.

Cybernetics and early human–computer interaction imagined technology as a way to augment collective ability, rather than reproduce an independent human-like mind.
Powerful models create new capabilities while relying on data work, content moderation, chip production and energy systems. Their risks fall unequally across workers, creators and underrepresented cultures.
The tension between imitation and understanding remains. What has changed is scale: systems now influence education, employment, media and public services.
