The Visible Melody

When AI interprets music as a spatial world

The Visible Melody explores the possibility of AI understanding and interpreting music. Notes become shapes, intervals alter color and chords produce new fields; together, these mappings form a proposed set of spatial-generation rules for an automatic music-space system.

The Question Behind the Work

Can an AI interpretation of music become a space people can enter?

Sound unfolds in time, while an intelligent visual system must decide what to stabilize as shape, color, movement and spatial structure. Those choices can help an audience notice musical relationships, but they also reveal how the system interprets what it hears.

The project therefore treats mapping rules as the core of a future automatic music-space generator. By making the rules explicit, AI interpretation becomes an argument that audiences can understand, question and eventually change.

Following the Research

Following the long effort to connect hearing and sight

A historical timeline connects color organs, Futurist experiments, electronic visualizers and computer software with the development of virtual and metaverse environments. It asks how each technical shift changed the uses of music—and what future spatial systems may change next.

From an Idea to a Form

How can visual rules become an automatic music-space system?

The system divides a piano score into two-measure segments. Notes determine geometric forms, intervals control changes in hue and chords create separate color events.

The final study combines rule-based output with collage and Cinema 4D experiments. These prototypes outline a future system in which AI interprets music and automatically generates a navigable visual space, without claiming that one spatial reading is the music’s only meaning.

Every visual note is also a decision about what the system believes matters in the music.
