Total Ice Hockey

When technology stops assisting sport and begins to define it

Total Ice Hockey places the histories of equipment, measurement, rules and athlete training on one system map. It then uses that history to propose a layered human–robot arena, asking how AI officiating, new bodies and new targets would redistribute authority, risk and value inside a future sport.

The Question Behind the Work

A sport is not only a field and a set of athletes. It is also a system for deciding what counts.

Equipment changes performance, measurement changes evidence, rules change legitimate action and training changes the kinds of bodies a sport produces. These histories continually alter one another.

The project asks what happens when AI and robotics enter all four layers at once. The resulting question is not whether technology improves hockey, but who gains authority to redefine the game.

From an Idea to a Form

What kind of arena makes technological governance visible?

The proposed sport spans a main rink, inclined rink and aerial platform. Human and robotic players occupy different roles, and scoring targets change after goals.

AI referees operate inside the arena while human officials retain external review. The arrangement turns automation, exception handling and responsibility into explicit parts of the game’s design.

Once technology writes the rules, it is no longer only equipment.

Total Ice Hockey matters because it makes governance part of speculative design. New arenas and machines are visually compelling, but the project’s deeper contribution is to ask how participants can inspect, challenge and revise the systems that decide safety, fairness and value.
