Blades of Time

When access to a sport becomes a problem of translation

Blades of Time begins with the high cost, scarce infrastructure and long learning curve of ice hockey. Its VR experience pod does not try to reproduce a rink in miniature; it asks which sensations and forms of knowledge must survive when a physical sport is translated into an accessible immersive system.

The Question Behind the Work

Before someone can play ice hockey, they must first gain access to an entire technical environment.

Rinks, protective equipment, coaching and basic skating make ice hockey unusually expensive in time, money and infrastructure. The barrier exists before tactics or performance can even begin.

The project asks whether immersive technology can create a credible first encounter without pretending that a screen is the same as a body on ice. Access therefore becomes a question of what should be translated, what can be abstracted and what risks must remain visible.

Following the Research

Breaking the sport into sensations, actions and learning stages

The design follows skating, collision, sound, spatial orientation and tactical choice as separate systems before recombining them into one experience journey.

A High-Threshold Sport

The research identifies cost, equipment, training time and physical risk as connected barriers rather than isolated inconveniences.

02

The Body as Interface

Wind, impact, foot pressure, vibration and spatial audio translate movement into cues that can be felt and acted upon.

Learning as a Journey

History, equipment, famous plays, AI team simulation and personal highlights form a sequence from interpretation to participation.

From an Idea to a Form

How can a compact pod hold the scale of a rink?

A spherical cabin contains a tracked headset, hockey-stick controller, sliding platform and modular feedback devices. The enclosure supports exhibition use while separating the participant from surrounding movement.

Its design is less a miniature stadium than an instrument: each layer produces a limited signal that the participant combines into an embodied impression of speed, contact and decision.

Accessibility depends on which parts of the physical experience the system refuses to flatten.

Why It Matters

Why this project matters

Blades of Time matters because it treats immersive design as an argument about access. A simulation widens participation only when it is honest about the bodily knowledge it preserves, the risks it removes and the experiences it cannot reproduce.
